| October
is National Popcorn Month
Pop up a batch or two!!
October
is national popcorn month because popcorn is harvested
each fall in the Midwest USA. This all-time favorite
snack is cheap, easy to make, and most people like
it--the perfect treat!
Old-Fashioned
Stove-Top Popcorn
1
one-gallon soup pot with a loose lid that allows steam
to escape
1/3 to ½ cup popcorn kernels, enough to cover
the bottom of the pan, one kernel deep
1/3 cup of vegetable oil, approximate amount
Add
the oil to the pot and swirl to cover the bottom of
the pot. Heat the oil, but not so hot that it smokes.
Add a couple of kernels. When they pop, add the rest
of the popcorn. Cover the pot and shake pot side to
side so popcorn doesn't sit in one place very long.
When the popping slows down, remove the pot from the
heat. Remove the lid after popping stops, so that
moisture will not build up on lid and drip down popcorn.
Salt the popcorn after it has been popped. This makes
3 to 4 quarts of popcorn.
Note:
Store popcorn kernels in an airtight jar. The reason
popcorn doesn't pop is because it has lost the moisture
within the kernel. |
